*Starred Review* When she was just a teenager, Meg Pepper's best friend was killed by a drunk driver. Still haunted by the loss, Meg is now an adult with a teen daughter of her own. After picking up her daughter one day, she stops to let a boy cross the street. What she doesn't know is that on the other side of the road, just a little further down, another driver is not paying attention. When the other car hits the boy, he is left with life-threatening injuries. What's worse, Meg and her daughter know the boy, whose name is Jack. Meg is overcome by guilt for having waved Jack through just moments before he was struck. The past comes back as she relives her friend's death all those years before. Meg begins to unravel, ignoring her marriage and her friends. Canadian novelist Brown's debut novel, Come Away with Me, was a Globe and Mail Best 100 Books of 2015. Her latest is sure to win over fans of Elin Hilderbrand and Liane Moriarty for its character-driven and moving story that asks, "What if you did one thing differently?" Brown (
Copyright 2017 Publisher Weekly Annex.Come Away with Me ) burrows into the unraveling of two families in this meticulous study of unresolved guilt and buried secrets. Meg, a busy realtor, mother of 15-year-old daughter Audrey and wife of radiologist Ryan, sees a car mow down and paralyze Audrey's friend, Jackâan event that triggers the return of Meg's haunting nightmares of the death at age 16 of her own best friend, Paige, in a drunk-driving crash. Meg, who never resolved her guilt over Paige's death, becomes increasingly undone by Jack's injury, blaming herself for waving at the boy across the street just before the driver slammed into the teen. As the weight of past and present tragedies gnaws at Meg and frays the bonds of her marriage and friendships, Audrey deals with the situation by acting out. At the same time, Jack's father, stay-at-home dad Andrew, moves closer to Meg (and further from his own angry and distraught wife, Alyssa). Brown subtly weaves the ordinary details of everyday life with the turmoil of emotions bubbling dangerously close to the surface. This is an admirably layered portrait of how love can bend and still not break, and how the pain of betrayal and lost innocence, once confronted, can slowly fade.(May)
